Many Americans are at risk for nutrition-related health conditions, and economically disadvantaged people are at particular risk for obesity, heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly known as food stamps) aggravates the problem by paying retailers for unhealthful foods that fuel these disease epidemics.
Instead, SNAP—the largest nutrition assistance program in the United States with approximately 40 million Americans participating each month—should emphasize healthful foods that help economically disadvantaged people fight disease…..
